The Week From Hell

It started out great, with Nana arriving on Saturday. We were so excited for her visit and for a week of fun. And then....

Saturday night Norah got a fever that ended up turning into an amazingly high and severe fever, hovering around 105 for two days. We spent time up at the hospital and pediatric urgent care, the real low point hitting when we had to catheterize her to get urine out and draw amazing amounts of blood from her arm. What do you say to a screaming toddler when she is saying 'no mama, no mama, no mama....HELP' as you hold her down while the doctor and two nurses forcefully withdraw urine? There are no words. And there are no answers to her illness. They were spooked to say the least because she exhibited no other symptoms. We brought her home and nursed her thru two nights of high fevers and then another night of mild fever and we think she is on the mend. We are hoping for no fever by tomorrow or back to the hospital.

After six short days of successful and improvement, Mae has reverted to her old ways of not sleeping. She naps for 20-30 minutes, wakes through the night again and is just a pistol to get back down after she has only been in bed for a quick cat nap. Alas, maybe it is a work in progress, two steps forward, one step back? We have to believe in the greater good of sleep, as we long for those 10 hour nights again.

To add insult to injury, Dave tried to get to work early today and was stuck on the freeways behind a terrible accident only to arrive at work (two hours later) to a flooded office. And on the home front, the rest of us woke to a horrific smell in our dining room only to learn there is a dead animal stuck in our wall and causing our house to smell like how I imagine hell to smell. Awesome.

Oh, and since I am complaining, my eczema on my arms and legs is back in full force, making for a very ugly entry into summer clothes. Brilliant.

I pray that the big one doesn't hit tonight...but we are in SoCal and we are due for a little shake, rattle and roll. Bring it on world, we Stricklands can take it, bring it on.
